Will Birch is a former drummer (of the Kursaal Flyers and The Records), music journalist and songwriter/producer. In his role as the latter he worked with artists such as Dave Edmunds, The Searchers, Dr Feelgood and the Long Ryders. He has also written extensively for Mojo and Uncut magazines.
His first book, No Sleep Till Canvey Island - The Great Pub Rock Revolution (Virgin, 2000) is the ultimate guide to a crucial 7-year period in British rock history, featuring anecdotes from key figures such as Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe. His book Ian Dury: The Definitive Biography (Sidgwick and Jackson, 2010) is an in-depth and compelling account of the complex and charismatic artist.
Cruel to Be Kind (Constable, 2019) is the definitive account of Nick Lowe's uncompromising life as a songwriter and entertainer, from his days at Stiff Records, to becoming the driving force behind Rockpile, to the 1979 smash hit 'Cruel To Be Kind'.
