Gareth Williams MD ScD FRCP FRCPE is the Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Honorary Senior Research Fellow in English at the University of Bristol. Hugely influential in his field, he built up an internationally recognised research group in diabetes and obesity and became a Professor of Medicine producing over 200 scientific papers and over 20 medical books, including prize-winning Textbook of Diabetes. He has also served as President of the Anglo-French Medical Society and Chair of the Trustees of the Edward Jenner Museum.

Gareth also boasts an impressive literary career in popular science and the history of medicine. His books include Angel of Death: The Story of Smallpox (shortlisted for the Wellcome Medical Book Prize), Paralysed with Fear: The Story of Polio, A Monstrous Commotion: The Mysteries of Loch Ness, and most recently, Unravelling the Double Helix: The Lost Heroes of DNA.
