Critics are raving about Leicester Curve’s new production of Billy Elliot

The first new production of the hit musical by Elton John and Lee Hall has opened at the Curve Theatre in Leicester. The production, directed by Nikolai Foster and with set design by Michael Taylor, has received rave reviews from critics. Hear what some of them are saying about the show:

The Times ★★★★★

“It’s a flat-out masterpiece.”
“He (Nikolai Foster), the set designer Michael Taylor and the choreographer Lucy Hind use this wide-open space to ensure that work and home and school and leisure are all vividly drawn yet inseparable.”
“Several of Foster’s Curve musicals have gone on to have a life elsewhere. This, his biggest yet, will surely, hopefully, be one of them.”

WhatsOnStage ★★★★★

“sparkles (and shines) like a theatrical diamond”
“Michael Taylor’s inspired set design is a wonder to behold”
“In summary, a must see.”

Leicester Times ★★★★★

“a joy to witness”
“The staging of the play is something which impressed me enormously”
“a marvellous production with all the right ingredients to stir powerful emotions, inspire, uplift entertain”

West End Best Friend ★★★★★

“The Curve’s expansive stage space is used to full effect throughout, and Michael Taylor’s deconstructed, industrial-style sets are stunning.”
“This beautifully realised production will make audiences laugh, cry, and leave the theatre with a renewed sense of optimism.”

The Reviews Hub ★★★★★

“Designer Michael Taylor uses The Curve’s large stage most effectively: his set, like some of the content, is brutal.”
“A must-see.”

Broadway World ★★★★★

“Michael Taylor utilises the full dimensions of the vast stage at the Curve to house a three-story tower, surrounded by scaffolding, chain-link fencing and an army of exposed lighting rigs.”
“emotionally intense and technically impressive production still packs a lasting punch.”

The Stage ★★★★

“The ambitious undertaking has certainly paid off.”
“Michael Taylor’s bold set has a suitably industrial aesthetic, all exposed girders and scaffolding in blackened steel and hazard-stripe yellow.”

The Telegraph ★★★★
