Debut author Skye McKenna has signed a five-book deal with Welbeck Children’s Books for her magical middle-grade series Hedgewitch, with the first title due to launch in hardback in April 2022 as a lead title. The second book, Woodwitch, publishes in 2023. The series will be published in the UK under Welbeck’s new Flame imprint and rights have already been sold to Brazil, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Welbeck Children’s Associate Publisher, Felicity Alexander, instantly recognised Hedgewitch as the kind of fantasy that appeals to readers of Nevermoor, The Worst Witch and The Dark is Rising, saying: ‘It’s fresh yet classic, enchanting and intensely human, with the most satisfying (and surprising) five-book story arc.’
Skye was born and raised in the Australian outback but, as a fantasy reader from childhood, always longed to move to the UK where so many of her favourite books were set. She says: 'I've always loved books that re-enchant the world we live in and I hope to share a little of this magic with the readers of Hedgewitch. The chance to work with the Soho Agency and Welbeck on the series is certainly a dream-come-true!'
Skye is represented at The Soho Agency by Philippa Milnes-Smith.
