Grand Plan: A Fund By Creatives, For Creatives

Here at The Soho Agency, we’d like to take the time to highlight an initiative we have worked with over the last year. Grand Plan is a young charity, launched in May 2021, keen to promote a different kind of funding. Each month, they award three £1,000 grants to creative people of colour based in the UK to help fund a project. Their aim is to strike a balance between keeping what they do simple, clear and accessible whilst responding to what they learn as the charity progresses. Since their launch, they have received more than 1,500 applications and awarded 29 £1,000 grants, and counting!

The idea for the fund was born out of the Black Lives Matter movement after the murder of George Floyd. Many cultural organisations were posting black squares and public statements, and the team who founded Grand Plan wanted to create something tangible and useful. They connected with a community of ambassadors from the creative worlds, including The Soho Agency, who responded to the idea and came together to make these grants possible. The funds are available across a broad range of cultural work: nail bars, skate groups, glass blowers, poets, rappers, tattoo artists, embroiderers, writers, archivists, theatre-makers, and much more.

We are keen to see the next phase of growth for the team at Grand Plan, and continue to offer our support in helping them wherever possible.
