Sparkling Review Round Up: Whistle Down the Wind and Identical!

It’s been a busy few weeks of openings across the country, and Soho clients have been working hard on various productions. Two of these are a brand-new revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s other musical about Jesus, Whistle Down the Wind at the Watermill Theatre and an exciting new musical Identical at the Nottingham Playhouse.

Whistle Down the Wind, with design by Simon Kenny, has been met with widespread critical praise, with The Guardian calling it ‘an outstanding production’ and awarding the show 5 stars.

WhatsOnStage were similarly positive, giving the show 4 stars and commenting on how ‘There is something magical about the way every show produced there fits so perfectly into this tiny intimate space’.

Another 4 star review from Broadway World, picking up specifically on how ‘Simon Kenny’s set … provides a Pandora’s box of visuals that keeps evolving until the very last moment.’

Finally, West End Best Friend round out the 4 star reviews; ‘This new production is beautifully staged, the set design by and the lighting design by Andrew Exeter work flawlessly together.’

Elsewhere in the country, new musical Identical had its world premiere at the Nottingham Playhouse. Based on the original source material which inspired The Parent Trap, the show has choreography by Matt Cole and Musical Supervision by Caroline Humphries.

The Telegraph gave the show 5 stars calling it ‘ingenious to the point of genius’.

Another positive review came from The Guardian, giving the show 4 stars, and from WhatsOnStage who also gave the show 4 stars, highlighting both Matt and Caroline; ‘Matt Cole’s choreography shines’, Caroline Humphris’ musical supervision and the orchestration work of Tom Curran and band under musical director Tamara Saringer are top notch and pitch perfect accompaniment.’

Whistle Down the Wind runs at the Watermill Theatre until 10 September. Identical is at Nottingham Playhouse until 14 August before moving to The Lowry in Salford.
