Waterstones Selects Grey as a Need to Read Children’s Book for 2024

We were delighted to see Grey by Laura Dockrill, illustrated by Lauren Child, named as one of ‘The Children’s Books You Need to Read in 2024’. This is Waterstones’ ‘definitive list’ of unputdownable children’s books, from Young Adult to Picture Books.

Grey is the story of a child who feels as though all their colours have disappeared. Despite the joyful orange balloon, the huge yellow sun and the bright green trees, the child still feels grey. That is until a reassuring hand reaches out and shares words of kindness. Soon the child begins to see the warmth of colour again, and understands that their colours will always be there and that they will always be loved, whether they feel grey or sunshine yellow.

The joint project appears in the ‘Picture Book’ section of Waterstones’ list and is described as being ‘heartwarming and sublime’. Waterstones also calls the book a ‘beautiful, sensitively handled allegory of acceptance and understanding emotions from two picture book titans.’

Grey will be published by Walker books on the 2nd May 2024.

A fantastic review – congratulations Laura and Lauren.
