Jim Matthews is a former British soldier who now teaches English as a foreign language. In 2015, an image of an ISIS beheading on Facebook motivated Jim to travel to Syria. He spent a year fighting with the YPG, a Kurdish militia group, in a region known as Rojava. Jim was arrested on re-entry to the UK and became the first Briton to face terrorism charges for fighting against ISIS. His first book, Fighting Monsters (Mirror Books), is a candid first-hand account of his experience. Jim describes the reality of the war in Syria for those fighting ISIS in their own country and those, like him, that join that fight.
